Statues and Lumps: A Strange Coincidence?
This paper attacks various arguments for the impossibility of coinciding objects. Distinguishing a temporally relative from an absolute sense of ‘the same’, we see that the intuition, ‘this is only one thing’, and the dictum, ‘two things cannot occupy the same place at the same time’, are individuating things at a time rather than absolutely and are therefore compatible with coincidence. A 50-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a mass on the right side of the neck. She had a past medical history of multiple interventions of cosmetic surgery in her face and breasts. She also had a macroprolactinoma treated with transsphenoidal surgery in our clinic in 1993 because of intolerance to bromocriptine. The surgery confirmed the diagnosis of lactotroph adenoma...
متن کاملHow strange a non-strange heavy baryon?
We give some general arguments in favor of the large magnitude of matrix elements of an operator associated with nonvalence quarks in heavy hadrons. We estimate matrix element 1 2mΛb 〈Λb|s̄s|Λb〉 ≃ 1 ÷ 2 for Λb baryon whose valence content is b, u, d quarks. This magnitude corresponds to a noticeable contribution of the strange quark into the heavy baryon mass 1 2mΛb 〈Λb|mss̄s|Λb〉 ≃ 200 ÷ 300MeV ....

Ignorance of the culture and traditions of immigrants leads to misunderstanding and is a factor in mental illness among people whose new home seems intimidating as Dr. Farrukh Hashmi, a psychiatrist and a member of the Midlands Race Relations Board, explains. an immigrant was taken to a mental hospital because he was said to have been aggressive, had been shouting at his family, and he had thre...
متن کاملA strange gait.
A 5-year-old afebrile girl presented to the office with an antalgic limp and left foot pain that lasted 3 weeks. On physical examination, swelling and redness were present and the top of the midfoot was painful to touch. Weight-bearing radiographs of the 2 feet were obtained (Figures 1-3; Figures 1 and 2 available at www.jpeds.com). The left foot navicular bone appears “wafer like”—flattened wi...
